Educational Philosophy
Music education is important in schools because music can make students well rounded individuals and it is essential to a complete education. Music is not limited to a single discipline as it can be integrated with math, history, culture, social studies, art, and can provide students with an appropriate way to express feelings and emotions. It provides a social bond between students in ways that other subjects alone cannot. Music education can help to create a positive social environment among students and encourage them to become positive contributors to the surrounding community. With a good social environment, music can keep students occupied, “off the streets”, and create a sense of belonging. Through participation, students will also learn that in order to achieve success, it takes hard work and practice but in the end it will be worth it.
A music teacher should be certified and qualified to teach her subject and be able to demonstrate this knowledge. An excellent music teacher is able to show enthusiasm for the subject that students can draw from. She should have knowledge of the materials being used including instruments, fingerings, the voice, minor instrument repair, and technology. A willingness to put in the extra effort is also needed. She must be dedicated and committed to student learning and development. The National Standards for Music Education must be made a top priority in curriculum planning. A music teacher should put in the effort to show students that they are cared about and that the subject is important.
All students must have access to a well-rounded music education. Every student can develop a connection with music and should be given the opportunity to discover it. The teacher should be a provider of tools to students and in turn should allow students to use those tools. Whether it is through singing, instrumental playing, or clapping rhythms in a general music class, every student, regardless of race, socio-economic status, or ability level should be able to participate in music education.
